about

I wrote the text score for black and blue (the color of hope in the dark) on Brexit day (31/01/20). The work is based on Rebecca Solnit’s Hope in the Dark: untold histories, wild possibilities (2004, 2016) in which she makes a radical case for hope as a commitment to act in a world whose future remains uncertain and unknowable.
During lockdown, I invited N.O. Moore and Edward Shipsey to collaborate remotely. I sent them each a recording of my vocal rendition of the score for them to listen to while performing the instrumental part. They both sent back two different yet equally wonderful responses gathered here with two short solos I achieved with a similar process.

I structured this digital release like a double album with an invisible divide between a virtual A side (electronic, almost) and a B side (unplugged, just about).

black and blue was performed live for the last day of Klangraum 2020 ‘day by day’ in Düsserldorf on 2nd August 2020.
